Daniel Bell – Subterranean
Widely-revered in the underground dance scene, Daniel Bell has made a name for his raw, stripped-back take on house and techno (as well as his infamous marathon DJ sets). A native Californian, Bell has also enjoyed stints living in Berlin and New York, before relocating to Detroit – the city which he has become most associated with. Absorbing influences of deep Chicago house and Detroit techno, his 1998 track Subterranean – released on US label Elevate – demonstrates his producing prowess, a blissful, minimalist melody that ebbs and flows naturally throughout almost 8 minutes. The streamlined groove attracts with its marching drums, jingling percussion sequences and rumbling bassline, with each element pieced together fluidly beneath a blemish of keyboard flourishes and reversed, chopped key samples.
